Used an aluminium spaceframe body the SLS will come with gullwing doors that rise upwards on roof-mounted hinges, just like Mercedes’s 300SL sports car from half a century ago AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid engine developing 420 kW/ 571 hp peak output, 650 Nm of torque and dry sump lubrication, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in a transaxle configuration, sports suspension with aluminium double wishbones and a kerb weight of 1620 kilograms based on the DINstandard.

Successor to the SLR in both position and alphabetical order, the SLS will supposedly be faster, cheaper and easier to love than its predecessor. Instead of aiming for the miniscule hypercar market the SLR was designed for, the SLS will battle against the cream of the crop in the roughly $200,000 range. Expect to see it facing off against everything from the Nissan GT-R to the Porsche 911 GT3 to the Ferrari F430 in both magazine comparisons and bonus-toting executives’ minds.

Sekarang masih prototype jadi belum tahu harganya,” jelasnya. (wir)

Parax: Iran unveils another electric car

Iranian university students at Qazvin's Azad University -- northwest of Tehran -- have designed and produced a new two-seat electric car.

A fifteen-member team of university students worked on the new plug-in car for 10 months.

The new car, named the Parax, weighs 450 kg and is lighter than another electric car that was unveiled at Tehran's Khaje Nasir Toosi University last week.

The Qasedak-e-Nasir (Dandelion of Nasir) weighed 700 kg.

Once the battery of the Parax is charged, it can cover a distance of 100 kilometers and can reach a velocity of 110 kph, the Mehr News Agency reported.

Dong Feng to invest $250m in new Turkish car plant

China's third-largest carmaker Dong Feng Motor is to invest $250 million in a planned Turkish plant with an annual capacity of 52,000 units, Turkey's government investment agency said on Wednesday.

Feasibility studies for the location are being carried out and construction should begin in the first quarter of 2010, the government investment agency said in a statement.

It also said Korean steel manufacturer Posco would make an initial greenfield investment in Turkey of $24 million to produce annually 170,000 million tonnes of flat steel, to be used primarily for the automotive sector.

Hyundai Assan, a joint enterprise between carmaker Hyundai and Turkey's Kibar Holding, announced on Wednesday it had chosen Turkey as the site for production of its new i20 series.

As sporting as the new SLS AMG may be to drive, it should be a reasonably nice—if not snug—place to spend time. The cabin is surprisingly free of conspicuous design flourishes, with a clean, simple dash most notable for its horizontal linearity and subtle secondary controls. The round vents and center stack look downright plebeian in pictures, however rendered they may be in top-shelf materials. Top-stitched Nappa leather and Alcantara, however, surround both occupants, while the driver faces a flat-bottom steering wheel that frames the tunneled gauges and info display.

Standard features include navigation, push-button start, parking sensors, stainless-steel pedals, radar cruise control, and more. Our favorite interior feature of all, however, is the bank of racecar-inspired shift warning lights top dead center in the cluster. Optional are a six-disc DVD player, a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG surround-sound system, mono- or duo-tone designo leather, designo light brown natural leather/braided leather, and more.

Other nifty options that will be available in Europe, and likely here, include paintwork using that cool liquid-metallic “Alubeam” silver or one of two matte finishes; carbon-fiber pieces like exterior mirrors, hood, and various interior bits; forged 10-spoke wheels; and an “uprated” performance chassis for “optimized dynamic transverse movement.” That last one sounds rather fun.
2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
Clearly, then, the SLS is a modern sports car that takes delight in evoking the past visually, but not so much dynamically. It will spawn a gullwing-less roadster, like the original, as well as a fully electric version. No matter what form the SLS takes, however, it will be highly sought after from the start.

McLaren MP4-12C Sports Car finally revealed

McLaren MP4-12C

The big news from the summer of 2007 and the subsequent rumor mill of McLaren's upcoming top secret P11 sportscar has finally culminated into a masterpiece-the MP4-12C.We take a closer look at this much awaited blue-blooded McLaren sportscar.

McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren Automotive has revealed its MP4-12C, the first in a range of high-performance sports cars. The 12C, and future models within the range, says the company, will challenge the world's best sports cars.

The MP4-12C is a high-performance, two-seat, mid-engined model in the sports car market segment for cars costing between £125,000 and £175,000 ($225,000 to $310,000). The 12C is pure McLaren, featuring no carryover parts from any other car, and it will be produced in Britain. It goes on sale in early 2011.

"It is a long-held dream of mine to launch a range of high-performance sports cars that set new standards in the industry," says Ron Dennis, chairman of McLaren Automotive.

"We began designing and building cars for aficionados of thoroughbred sports cars almost 20 years ago. Incorporating the leading-edge technologies that the McLaren Group has built up within its various companies, I believe we are now perfectly placed to open up this new chapter in McLaren's history."

At its heart, the MP4-12C features a revolutionary carbon-fibre chassis structure - the Carbon MonoCell - the first time, says the company, a car in this market segment is based around such a strong and lightweight racing car engineering solution and the first time any car has ever featured a one-piece carbon-fibre structure.

The 12C is powered by a McLaren M838T 3.8-litre, V8 twin-turbo engine producing around 600 horsepower, driving through a McLaren seven-speed Seamless Shift dual-clutch gearbox (SSG). The company says it is targeting not only new standards for engine power and performance in its sector but also class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

Throughout its history, McLaren's automotive division has built one of the world's most critically acclaimed supercars, the McLaren F1 (1993-1998), as well as the world's best-selling luxury supercar - the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (2003-2009).

BMW M1 Concept at Villa d'Este

BMW M1 ConceptThis year's Concorso d'Eleganza at Villa d'Este has its public day tomorrow, which is when the world will presumably get its first look at the new BMW M1 concept, a stunning, modern take on Munich's original supercar that is part of Bimmer's 30th anniversary celebration of the classic machine. The private exhibition took place today, however, and the guys at Asphalte.ch -- they were the first with live shots of the Lamborghini LP560-4 earlier this year -- have once again scored a coup, snapping the new, copper-colored M1 concept in all its glory, both alone and alongside its forebears. We expect to have a lot more on this car tomorrow (assuming a press kit will be released sometime overnight), but for now, head to Asphalte.ch to see more shots of the car under the lights. Hey BMW, just pull the trigger and greenlight a production version already, because this thing is awesome.

Supercars. The very word has become a bit played out, and words like "hypercar" or even "ultracar" are being used to try to inject some feeling of the mind-blowing performance of the upper echelon of modern high-end sports cars. But a few carmakers are beginning to realize that all-out performance isn't the only goal worth pursuing.

Audi's R8, for example, or Porsche's 911 Carrera exhibit a more sensible balance toward peformance and luxury than, say a Lamborghini Murcielago or even a Dodge Viper SRT10. With 420 horsepower from a naturally aspirated V-8 engine, the R8 is a mid-engined sports car with good, but not amazing, power, it handles brilliantly, and it doesn't break the bank. It's balanced.

So talk of the BMW Z10 sporting a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine makes a very enticing sort of sense. The latest rumors of the car, which pitch it as a mid-engined sports car with 450 horsepower and about 350 pound-feet of torque, also make it plain that it has no pretensions of chasing down the wildest and wickedest in the supercar arena.

That's a perspective that shows a longer view of things, with the days of completely unrestrained works of automotive engineering stretching toward dusk. Gordon Murray, legendary engineer and designer of the McLaren F1, recently voiced his thoughts on the matter, concluding that the future of the high-performance car must also be a green one.

So the Z10's rumored relatively lightweight design goal--considering modern safety requirements--at 3,300 pounds, making use of aluminum, carbon fiber and other composites, makes a lot of sense. As does the choice of a small-displacement, forced-induction engine. The dual-clutch transmission is almost de rigeuer for any sporting vehicle these days, but also lends more efficiency than a standard automatic.

Taken in light of the upcoming Vision EfficientDynamics concept as well, the Z10 design parameters could end up being even greener, though integrating a large amount of EfficientDynamics technology, particularly cutting-edge features, could prove too costly for production. BMW is thought to be targeting a similar price point to the standard Audi R8, at around $110,000.

The Z10's aesthetic design cues are likely to borrow from the M1 Homage concept (pictured), as well as from the Vision EfficientDynamics concept coming to Frankfurt next week, though it will also doubtless be grounded firmly in BMW's latest corporate face as well. An aggressive "face", with a strong kidney grille, slanted headlights, big air ducts and strong character lines along the sides will reflect the car's performance-focused nature.
