Packing an available V6, tons of standard safety equipment and a comfortable cabin all at a bargain-basement price, the Sportage is a value leader among small SUVs. Buyers with more flexible budgets may want to check out the Kia's stronger-engined competitors, however.

Pros
Impressive fit and finish, stylish and functional interior, hard-to-beat warranty, standard ABS, side airbags and stability control.

Cons
Down on power and drivetrain refinement versus its competitors.

What's New for 2006
The Sportage EX now features a standard tire-pressure monitor, while all models receive a cabin air filtration system.

Introduction:
The name Sportage doesn't really conjure up warm memories. Many folks remember the Sportage of yesterday, a crude cute-ute that was plagued with quality issues, a weak engine and a cheap interior. Introduced globally in 1993, the Sportage was a body-on-frame small SUV. Updates and revisions through the years were made in an effort to keep the truck-based 'ute competitive. The axe fell in 2002 when the aging Sportage disappeared to make way for the infinitely more refined midsize Sorento. Kia realized a gap was left when the Sportage departed, and knew it had to whip up a mini-ute just as modern as the successful Sorento.

Debuting last year fully redesigned, the current Sportage shares nothing with its predecessor. We're not just talkin' basic parts here: The new SUV even abandons the original's petite dimensions and truck-based body-on-frame structure in favor of a larger design based on a more carlike unibody platform. Kia's goal with the Sportage is to combine the smooth ride, agile handling and refinement of a passenger car, the style and driving position of an SUV and the interior room of a wagon, all in one versatile package. And the company has succeeded. The Sportage is longer, wider and taller than the average compact SUV. The stylish interior features quality materials and great ergonomics. A unique split-folding rear seat is able to fold flat to create a level cargo floor. It does this by lowering the bottom cushion into the footwell, and doesn't even require removal of the head restraints.

Power is provided by two different engines: a 2.0-liter, inline four-cylinder engine with continuously variable valve timing, which makes 140 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque; and an optional 2.7-liter V6 engine that produces 173 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, and a full-time four-wheel-drive system is optional. The system senses when one or both front wheels lose grip and automatically diverts up to 50 percent of the engine power to the rear wheels. The system can be manually set to a fixed 50/50 split when extra traction is needed for driving in the snow.

The Sportage scores highly on the safety front by including standard four-wheel antilock disc brakes, stability control, seat-mounted side-impact airbags for front occupants, and front and rear head-protecting side curtain airbags. No longer just a cute little SUV, the Sportage is now a serious competitor in a class of excellent machines. Its affordably priced combination of carlike ride dynamics, roomy passenger quarters and all-weather capability make for a compelling package.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options:
The Sportage is a compact four-door SUV offered in two trim levels, LX and EX. Both two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (which Kia calls 4WD) are available. Standard features on the LX include 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, power windows and locks, tinted glass, a rear wiper and a CD stereo system. The EX adds a sunroof, foglamps and keyless entry. Options include a premium audio system and leather seating.

Powertrains and Performance:
The standard engine on the LX is a 2.0-liter, inline four-cylinder engine. It generates 140 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque and is mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic with automanual-shift capability (2WD only). Optional on the LX and standard on the EX is a 2.7-liter V6 that produces 173 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. The V6 is available with the four-speed automatic only. Buyers can get front-wheel drive (2WD) or all-wheel drive (4WD) with either engine.

Safety:
The Sportage boasts six standard airbags -- front and side-impact airbags for both driver and passenger, and side curtain airbags for both front- and rear-seat occupants. Four-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction control and stability control are all standard equipment. Neither NHTSA nor the IIHS has crash tested the Sportage.

Interior Design and Special Features:
Kia designed a functional, roomy and attractive interior for the Sportage. Most of the materials are of good quality and the build quality is solid. The rear-seat design allows for a flat load floor by the process of lowering its cushion into the rear footwell; removing the head restraints is not necessary. With the rear seat folded, the Sportage offers 67 cubic feet of cargo capacity, a good figure for this class.

Driving Impressions:
The Sportage provides a carlike ride while returning relatively sporty handling on par with that of most peers. Should you push too hard through a corner, the standard stability and traction control system will intervene to keep you headed in the right direction. Additionally, the Sportage's four-wheel independent suspension system helps smooth bumps without the jittery feel typical of many SUVs. Power from the standard four-cylinder is barely adequate, so we recommend you stick with the larger 2.7-liter V6. The four-speed automatic isn't quite as smooth as the five-speed unit in the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV-4, but it always manages to keep the V6 right in its power band.

Would you really care enough what the speed is in Kilometers, enough to add stickers to your 66 Galaxie speedometer?

Hudsons, quite the difference between stylish cars, and odd looking trucks

The owner told me a bit of Hudson Hollywood information I've never learned before, the Hollywood was fundamentally a convertible chassis with a coupe top. They had to switch them between assembly lines from the convertible line to the hardtop line after getting all the undercarriage and chassis done. This is why it has such a roomy interior
This one is new to San Diego... it was just purchased from Florida. What does that matter? Well, I like the Hudson Hollywood look a lot, and realised I hadn't seen this one before, so I asked if it had been here long or if it was recently brought to San Diego.

Cool Caddy Convertible at Kimball Park (almost allliterative ain't it?)

Some great looking cars from the National City Kimball Park car show and Heritage Days

I love before and after photos

The first owner kept it til 1965, the second owner had it til 1980, and it was restored in 198

Electric Mercedes SLS

Mercedes SLS AMG supercar will come with 526bhp battery power as well as a V8

Mercedes SLS AMG
The new Mercedes SLS AMG supercar gets its big unveil at the Frankfurt motor show in September, and it’s set to be quite the technology fest.

As well as a 564bhp 6.2-litre V8 version there’ll be an all-electric SLS. It’s a bold move for Mercedes and AMG, but it doesn’t mean they’re belying their performance focus – power comes courtesy of four electric motors, with 526bhp and 649lb ft on tap. Those figures aren’t far short of the petrol SLS, and with thrust likely to arrive from zero revs, it’ll probably feel more powerful. The 0-62mph dash arrives in the same circa 4sec as the V8.

Those motors are cleverly applied, too. There’s one positioned beside each wheel (rather than in the hubs), reducing unsprung masses. It also means the car’s effectively all-wheel drive, with a transmission at each axle and torque vectoring sending power to the wheels that will use it best. It’ll means the electric SLS could have quite a different character to previous AMGs that send copious amounts of power to the rear wheels.

The 400-volt lithium ion battery is recharged by way of energy recuperation during braking. In its current early stages it’s not known what range will be like, but it’s likely that plugging your SLS into the mains will be another source of recharging.

Dynamics should be pretty sharp, too, with a low centre of gravity achieved by placing the battery and motors very low down in the car. Weight distribution should be fairly close to neutral, too. Impressively, no changes have had to be made to the gullwing car’s aluminium spaceframe chassis to accommodate the new setup.

While the petrol SLS is due next year, expect another few years to pass before the electric version comes to fruition. It could signal a stable future for high power AMGs, though. Volker Mornhinweg, CEO of AMG, said – ‘With the SLS AMG with electric drive, we wanted to redefine the super sports car. For us, it is not just about responsibility. We attach just as much importance to excitement and classic AMG performance.’

Honda's CR-Z sports car is go

Hybrid power for three-door coupe which goes on sale next summer.

Honda CR-Z
This is the all-new hybrid sports car from Honda which is set to hit UK showrooms by next summer. The car in question is the eagerly anticipated CR-Z, the spiritual successor to the much loved MkII CR-X.

Still currently a concept, the CR-Z – which stands for Compact Renaissance Zero – made its debut at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. From the off it was widely tipped to make the transition from prototype to production. Insiders say the road car will change little from what’s seen here, too. It will be a performance-oriented three-door coupé, designed to highlight how eco technologies can be used for sports cars as well as mainstream models. Expect it to see it in the metal at this year’s Japanese expo in October.

The CR-Z will become Honda’s third hybrid after the Civic and Insight. Like them, it will use Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system, which is also due in the Jazz at some point in the near future. Honda’s new CEO, Takanobu Ito, also confirmed the firm is developing a new hybrid system for use in mid-to-large vehicles. An engineer by training, Ito knows a thing or two about Honda sports cars, as he was instrumental in turning the NSX supercar from concept to reality. The CR-Z will hit Japanese showrooms in February next year, before arriving on British forecourts a few months later.

2011 Shelby Roush SR-71 Mustang Sold $375,000!

2011 Shelby Roush SR-71 Mustang

For the first time ever Carroll Shelby and Jack Roush are teaming up to create a one off Mustang for charity! According to a recently published article by Roush Performance, both Shelby and Roush have met with Ford Motor Company to design and engineer the 2011 SR-71 Mustang which will go up for auction at the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Airventure Aviation Show. All proceeds from the auction will go to support the EAA’s Young Eagles program.

Ford Motor Company has been a proud supporter of EAA and the Young Eagles for the past 15 years by providing various vehicles and donations each year to be raffled and auctioned off. Last year Ford created the AV-X10 Mustang which sold at auction for $250,000. The year prior Ford built another one-of-a-kind Mustang for the Airventure show, the 2008 AV8R Mustang. The AV8R was named after the famous P-51 fighter plane, which played a key role in World War II as a bomber escort. It sold for an amazing $500,000! In 2006 Ford and Shelby donated a Shelby GT-H Mustang, which sold for $250,000.

The 2011 SR-71 Mustang was inspired by the SR71 "Blackbird" spy plane built by Lockheed Martin in the 60s, an airplane that holds the world record for the fastest air breathing manned aircraft in history. The SR-71 Mustang will be packed with tons of unique features including a Whipple Twin Screw Supercharger atop it's 5.0L V8 engine and Carroll's and Jack's signatures embroidered on the seats. The auction for the SR-71 Mustang will take place on July 29th at 7:30 PM CST at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
