2011 Hyundai Equus

2011 Hyundai Equus
Hyundai has stepped up its game tenfold with the introduction of the 2011 Hyundai Equus sedan at The New York International Auto Show on Thursday. The Korean manufacturer’s new flagship is going to turn heads with its features, looks, and price.

The luxury sedan has a longer wheelbase than the Lexus LS 460, is reminiscent of a previous generation Mercedes S-Class in its design, comes packed with an amazing litany of features, and, when it’s introduced in the fall, will cost between $50,000 to $60,000, according to Hyundai Motors America president and CEO John Krafcik.

That’s at least $5,000 below the LS 460 and $35,000 below the S-Class.

The Equus is practically Maybach in its features, among them:

  • Heated, cooled and (optional) massage seats for the driver
  • Reclining rear heated and cooled seats with footrest
  • High intensity discharge Xenon headlights with adaptive lighting
  • Rear and optional front-view cameras that help in parking and also pulling out of blind spots like an alley
  • A 608-watt, 17-speaker, 13-channel Lexicon sound system

The R8 has been a phenomenal success for Audi, simultaneously raising the company's profile and allowing it to compete in the rarefied air of the supercar segment for the first time. Certainly in its latest V10 guise, the coupe's Porsche-like top speed of 194 mph — not to mention rapierlike handling — gives Audi sporting credentials it had not previously enjoyed.

But in the end, it won't be the 10 pistons, 525 horsepower or even the scant 4 seconds that it takes to accelerate to 60 mph that will sell the new convertible version of Audi's supercar. Mere numbers, technical specification or performance data, no matter how impressive, fail to capture what is required for the Spyder to reach the pinnacle of exotic car lust.

That missing piece is style, an attribute the coupe version of the R8 possesses to the point of waste. Park an R8 in any exotic sports car parking lot and the Audi will attract every bit as much adulation as a Lamborghini Gallardo or Ferrari 458 Italia. So, like the younger brother who has to follow in the footsteps of his team-captaining older sibling, the R8 Spyder has some mighty big shoes to fill.

Mercedes Benz AMG SLS

The body of the 2011 SLS AMG GT3 is the most significant difference from the road car starting with the aggressive front fascia and splitter to the massive rear spoiler. The hood of the race model is also very different from the normal SLS AMG with a large center cooling vent that helps to move air to cool the engine and the braking system. Along the side of the car, vents have been added to cool the rear brakes without compromising aerodynamics and all of these improvements to the overall cooling effort of the car makes it ideal for long road races like the 12 Hours of Sebring (click here for more about that event).

The exterior of the SLS GT3 is unmistakably Mercedes but inside of the 2011 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG GT3 the designers left the luxury at home. A GT3-spec roll cage wraps around the interior that is little more than a seat, a fire extinguisher, pedals and a steering wheel. There is no heating or cooling system even though it does keep the chrome vent openings and the carbon fiber center stack houses the few switches need to control the wipers, lights and ignition.

The SLS AMG racer uses the same 6.3L engine that is found in the street version with a carbon fiber driveshaft feeding the rear mounted transaxle. The power output of the 6.3L is expected to vary from the production street version of the SLS depending on the amount of power permitted by the FIA (the governing body of the GT3 class) but estimates seem to lean towards the 600hp range compared to the 563hp offered by the standard SLS AMG.

Mazda bringing Mazda2 to the states

Mazda2
Mazda2
At the 2010 New York Auto Show, Mazda announced pricing and more details on the upcoming all-new Mazda2 – and dubbed it “Zoom-Zoom Concentrated.” The 2011 Mazda2 plans to go on sale this July, starting at a reasonable $13,980 ($14,730 with destination charge) – putting it squarely up against the Nissan Versa, Chevy Aveo, and Toyota Yaris – along with the upcoming Ford Fiesta and Fiat 500. The Mazda2, as you may have guessed, is going to focus on being a fun to drive car and less on the “premium” segment (like the Fiesta) and the plastic econo-box image (like the Aveo, Yaris, and Versa.)

The 2011 Mazda2 has two trim levels available – Sport and Touring. The Sport trim gets some decent standard equipment, including ABS, traction and stability control, 15-inch steel wheels, A/C, power windows and locks, auxiliary jack, keyless entry, and tilt steering wheel. Sadly, cruise control is not standard. For $15,435, the Touring model gets you that cruise control along with upgraded seat cloth with red piping, 15-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tip, leather-wrapped steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, trip computer and a six-speaker stereo system.

Both trims get only one engine – a 1.5-liter, 100 horsepower, four-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox. Please people, pick the manual transmission.
