Driverless Car Race

The future of safe road traffic belongs to laser technology. This was demonstrated at the race for driverless cars, the DARPA Urban Challenge in the USA.

The winning Tartan Racing Team, the second-place Stanford Racing Team and the third-place Victor Tango Team in the finals held on 3 November used Ibeo laser sensors. The high-performance sensors were the racing vehicle's smart eyes. Besides these teams, another 3 additional vehicles in the race used the laser scanners made in Germany.

Smart Eyes

In order for the driverless cars to be capable of completely automatic driving, they have to be capable of recognizing their surroundings and reacting to the prevailing conditions in fractions of a second.

The Ibeo laser scanners serve as smart eyes that guide the vehicles safely through traffic.

Ford owners discard most litter, BMW and Citroen owners come 2nd & 3rd (UK)

Ford drivers drop the most rubbish from cars, according to a report issued by Keep Britain Tidy (KBT).

Of the 6,500 littering incidents recorded by KBT since July, 1,262 were reported to have involved Ford drivers. BMW drivers came out as the second worst offenders, with 318 reports, while Citroen drivers came third with 211 reports.

Regional variations were also significant, with 1,289 reports from the South East and 1,252 from the North West – but just 668 from the West Midlands.

The most common items discarded from cars were cigarette butts and fast food wrappers. Nearly 2,000 bags of rubbish are dumped every day on Britain's roads, according to KBT.

KBT says litter-lout drivers should get a one-point endorsement on their licence, a move that it claims is backed by 81% of people in the UK.

Dickie Felton, from KBT, said: 'Our research tells us the only way to stop some motorists from littering is with the threat of points on their licence and a fine.

We're talking to the Government to try and make it see how big a problem this is.'

A Ford spokesman said: 'We are obviously disappointed to see our customers implicated in this way. However, because Ford has been the market leader in the UK for 30 years, there are many more Fords on the road than any other brand, therefore you would expect Ford to be at the top of any survey carried out in this way.'

"Hyundai is awesome" - Honda CEO

Honda’s CEO, Takanobu Ito has said he sees Korean manufacturer, Hyundai as a huge threat to the future of Japanese automakers.

The Korean firm has seen strong sales growth across the world in the last few years and it is currently the top selling manufacturer in the UK for retail sales.

“Hyundai is awesome,” said Takanobu. “They are undoubtedly a threat because their products are cheap, and the quality is improving.”

Hyundai and its sister firm Kia have been successful across Europe and America in various scrappage incentive schemes. Models such as the i10 city-car, i20 supermini and i30 small family car have proven extremely popular in Europe. The Accent, Elantra and Veracruz have been very popular across North America.

Takanobu’s comments have also been echoed by designer Shiro Nakamura from Nissan.

“Hyundai is the biggest threat for the Japanese automakers. They have the technology but they seem to have cheaper labour.”

Mazda UK want to supply police cars (UK)

Japanese car maker, Mazda announced it plans to become a major UK police force vehicle supplier in 2010. With Mazda vehicles currently serving in 42 police forces and Government agencies like HM Revenue and Customs, the company now hopes to enter the National Policing Improvement Agency vehicle framework agreement.

“Police forces and other organisations like Mazda vehicles because they are a sporty drive and have first class reliability. It is such attributes that have enabled the company to provide the vehicles that we have done to date, even though we are currently not part of the framework agreement," Jason Jenkins, Mazda UK key account manager said in a release.

Today, the manufacturer supplies some three vehicles per month to law enforcement agencies, with the models most liked by police being Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda5, Mazda6 and Mazda CX-7. Besides police, Mazda delivered a few vehicles to UK fire brigades and NHS Trust ambulance fleets.

If it makes it in the vehicle framework agreement, Mazda hopes to deliver some 15 to 20 vehicles a month. The manufacturer will take the necessary steps towards being ready for the agreement, scheduled to come into effect in March 2010.

"We will not know until later this year or early in 2010 whether or not we will be included within the new agreement, but we are putting a lot of resources into obtaining approval and have exhibited at the annual National Association of Police Fleet Managers’ Conference."

"We are currently focusing on supplying vehicles for covert operations, but in the future we will be looking to supply vehicles for frontline ‘blue light’ police duties. Such business is a growth area for Mazda.”
