2010 Yamaha R1 New Motorcycle

Originally released for the 1998 model year, the Yamaha YZF-R1 established a new standard in terms of open-class sportbike design and performance. Externally the Yamaha R1 featured an aggressive insect-like shape that had yet to be seen on a production motorcycle. Internally the R1 was graced with, at the time, the most powerful and compact 998cc liquid-cooled engine ever produced for the motorcycling public. The R1’s slim and trim chassis was equally as impressive and set a new standard for handling both on the street and racetrack.
The Yamaha R1 consistently brings MotoGP technology to the street - at a price we all can afford.
The Yamaha R1 consistently brings MotoGP technology to the street - at a price we all can afford.

Over the last 11 years the Yamaha R1 has received numerous updates and complete redesigns. But the updates have always remained true to the YZF-R1’s original expression of style and mind-bending performance. For 2009, the R1 has received a complete revamp and now benefits directly from Valentino Rossi’s success aboard the Yamaha M1 in the MotoGP World Championship.

Most notably is the new Yamaha R1’s use of a unique engine firing order courtesy of its cross-plane crankshaft. This design radically changes the character of the engine when riding and is aimed at a more rider-friendly experience. Other changes include an entirely new chassis featuring a new frame, swingarm, fork and shock. Also new is the sleek new bodywork that retains the signature R1 front fascia as well as the Yamaha sportbike’s undertail exhaust pipes.

Valentino Rossi is ready to defend his MotoGP crown.

Yamaha unveiled the 2010 livery for its YZR-M1 MotoGP race bike ahead of the pre-season test in Malaysia.

The 2009 MotoGP Champion Valentino Rossi and runner-up Jorge Lorenzo are back on the track at the Sepang Circuit ready to continue their success in 2010.

“2009 was the most successful year for Yamaha’s racing activities for many years. It will be difficult to follow such a performance but we are intending to try!” says Lin Jarvis, managing director of Yamaha Motor Racing. “We are lucky to have the same fantastic rider line-up with Valentino and Jorge and we are looking forward to getting started with our work on track.”

For 2010, team engineers worked at improving the M1’s chassis and extending the durability of the engines. Teams will be limited to six engines through the entire 18-race schedule or face penalties. The engine rule may have an effect on many teams’ overall strategy, especially as the season goes on. In particular, damaging an engine in a crash early in the season could put a MotoGP team in a tight situation.

The previous two seasons, Fiat Yamaha erected a dividing wall to separate Rossi and Lorenzo in the pit garage. The wall will be back in 2010, but Yamaha is taking the additional step of not sharing data between the two rivals.

“This year we are taking into consideration the two riders will be main rivals for the championship. We decided to respect this internal competition, to respect their own way to race and to approach the competition therefore during the (race) weekend, the two teams will be much more independent,” says Davide Brivio, Fiat Yamaha team manager. “Of course, at the Yamaha Motor Company level, back in the factory and the office, the engineers will have access to all information but the two teams inside the garage will work more independently, even from a technical point of view.”

Review: Ducati Multistrada 1200

Ducati Multistrada 1200

Ducati Multistrada 1200 Pricing
Ducati announced on November 15, 2009 that the pricing for the new 2010 Multistrada 1200 will begin at $14,995.

The revolutionary Bosch-Brembo ABS system will be available for the Multistrada 1200; a first for Ducati which will reinforce the brand's reputation for world-class stopping power. The ABS system is one of the three available option packages for the bike, and will bring the MSRP to $16,495.

The second option package for the Multistrada 1200 is the "S Sport" package. This package will include the Bosch-Brembo ABS system; as well as Ducati Traction Control, and the Ducati-Öhlins Electronic Suspension system.

The "Sport" version of the "S" moniker comes from the inclusion of carbon fiber air intakes, cam belt covers, rear hugger and lateral air extractors. MSRP for the bike with the "S Sport" package is $19,995.

For the touring fan, the Multistrada is also available with the "S Touring" package. The "S Touring" model is identical to the "S Sport" package, except instead of the additional carbon fiber accessories this model includes side luggage, a center stand and heated grips. The "S Touring" package also carries an MSRP of $19,995.

It looks like the Touring model is the best value. Delivery of the Multistrada 1200 will begin in spring 2010.

UPDATE: December 2009 - Why such an emphasis on the Multistrada 1200, the bike Claudio Domenicali said will be Ducati's bread and butter for the next 20 years? Here's a tip: BMW sold more GS-series bikes in the UK in the 2009 model year than all Ducatis in total. The BMW R1200GS is massively popular in the UK and Europe, with 1,936 sold in the UK alone, a sportbike-mad market. Ducati sold approximately 1,690 motorcycles in total. So a Multistrada that will take some of the GS market share could greatly boost Ducati's fortunes in the UK.
